Ronnie Floyd, president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention Executive Committee, announced Thursday night (Oct. 14) he will leave the position at the end of October. This comes over a week after the EC voted to waive its attorney-client privilege in the investigation of the EC’s handling of sex abuse claims in the Southern Baptist Convention. Floyd said the vote leaves him unable to serve his fiduciary responsibilities. He stated he would have released the letter Oct. 11, but his mother-in-law died Sunday and her funeral wasn’t held until Wednesday (Oct. 13).
Floyd was elected to serve as EC president April 2, 2019, coming on board a year after revelations about sexual abuse claims in some Southern Baptist churches were first revealed by the Houston Chronicle. He followed Frank Page in the position, after allegations of an inappropriate relationship involving Page were revealed.
Floyd’s letter was released around 7:30 Thursday night.
