Mike Stone, former chairman of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Executive Committee, will be nominated for president of the denomination during this summer’s annual meeting in Nashville, The Christian Index reported Jan. 13.
Stone is pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear, Ga., and on the steering council for the Conservative Baptist Network, which launched in 2020 in response to concerns over the SBC’s direction on social justice issues.
Kevin Williams, president of the Georgia Baptist Convention, announced Stone’s nomination, calling him “the kind of experienced pastor and statesman Southern Baptists need.”
Albert Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, announced last year his intention to run for SBC president again in 2021, after the 2020 annual meeting was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
