Court will mull whether states can ban early abortions
The justices of the U.S. Supreme Court said May 17 they will hear arguments next fall in a case that could have a significant impact on states’ abortion laws. The case out of Mississippi asks whether states can ban abortions before an unborn baby is viable. “This is a landmark opportunity for the Supreme Court to recognize the right of states to protect unborn children from the horrors of painful late-term abortions, said Marjorie Dannenfelser of the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List.
Baylor regents signal support for new LGBTQ student group
The Baylor University Board of Regents resolved in May to pursue continued “care, connections, and community” for LGBTQ students at the Christian university in Waco, Texas. An LGBTQ student group has petitioned over the last 10 years for a charter under Baylor’s Division of Student Life. The resolution adopted by the regents signals support for the formation of a new, chartered student group that would adhere to the Baylor’s stated beliefs on marriage and sexuality.
Peoria pregnancy center seeks temporary home after arson
Women’s Care Center in Peoria suffered $250,000 in damage after a fire was intentionally set May 3. The pro-life pregnancy center provides ultrasounds, medical testing, parenting classes, and baby gear for hundreds of families each year. The center’s founder, Christine Dennis, said after the fire the center has 500 women currently on its client list whose babies are due in the coming months. The center is seeking a temporary location while its original building is rebuilt.
Lifeway finalizes sale of downtown Nashville building
The Southern Baptist Convention’s publisher has completed the sale of its Nashville headquarters for $95 million. The new owners of the 9-story building are two investment firms, but Lifeway Christian Resources will continue to occupy part of the building until it determines a location for its new workspace. The entity’s new work environment will offer a mix of meeting spaces and drop-in workstations. Employees will continue to work remotely the majority of the time.
PBS debuts Billy Graham documentary
As part of its “American Experience” series, PBS aired a new 2-hour look at the life of Billy Graham. The documentary includes his early life and time as a student at Wheaton College, and Graham’s move to Los Angeles to launch his evangelistic crusades. It also addresses his political involvement and relationships with several U.S. Presidents. The documentary initially aired May 17 and will be repeated on PBS stations.
