Merritt replaces Stetzer as Resolutions chair

January 13, 2021 By Illinois Baptist Staff

Former Southern Baptist Convention President James Merritt (right) will chair the 2021 SBC Resolutions Committee, replacing Ed Stetzer of Wheaton College’s Billy Graham Center.

Stetzer would have chaired the committee at the 2020 SBC annual meeting, but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Stetzer informed SBC President J.D. Greear he is unable to serve this year. Merritt, who chaired the committee in 1993, “will lead this committee with a pastor’s heart, a scholar’s intellect and a prophet’s zeal,” Greear said.

Merritt, who pastors Cross Pointe Church in Duluth, Ga., told Baptist Press, “I look forward to working with the Resolutions Committee in serving our convention, hopefully in such an edifying way that God is glorified and the Gospel is above all.”

Before my wife, Gloria, and I even married, we vowed to establish a rock-solid family tradition of daily devotions together. But after almost 25 years of marriage and building a family, we could count on a single hand the longest streak of consecutive days when every member had come together for family worship or devotions […]
