Author Max Lucado revealed he was a victim of childhood sexual abuse at a Wheaton College gathering on evangelicals’ response to the #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements.
Christianity Today reported on the Dec. 13 summit where Lucado was joined by speakers including Beth Moore and Ed Stetzer, executive director of Wheaton’s Billy Graham Center.
“My name is also on the list of those who have been sexually abused,” Lucado said during the day’s final message. “As a young man, in my boyhood, not by a church member or a family member but by a community leader.”
The bestselling author and Texas pastor also expressed personal conviction he felt at the summit.
“I’d also like to add my name to the list of those who have sensed today some desire for increased personal repentance,” he said. “In listening, I thought, “I had a conversation with her, I could have done better.” Or remembering the locker room banter from my football days many, many years ago. And just condescending attitudes that I as a senior pastor have employed. So I seek the Lord’s forgiveness.”
