Streator | Some trees were downed, and the Streator Baptist Camp sign was damaged Monday night (July 15) when a severe thunderstorm swept through the area. Camp Manager Jacob Kimbrough said the camp is hosting Fox Valley Baptist Association’s Children’s Camp this week, but all the children were safe inside camp buildings when the storm hit around 9 p.m.
When the Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued Kimbrough said, “The wind had started picking up and we had already started bringing the children inside.” Fox Valley Association’s 15-plus children’s camp staff led the 40 campers in their evening worship service as the storm swept through the camp.
None of the downed trees damaged any of the buildings although a few are blocking access to the trail areas. While he said the camp received “quite a bit of rain,” a quick survey found no flooding. Kimbrough expects the clean-up to be quick and said none of the damage “will affect any camping going forward.”
