“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!” Psalm 139:1 (ESV)
Scripture is full of examples of God’s all-knowingness. His understanding is personal: he knows us before we are born, and hears our words before we say them (Psalm 39). He knows exactly who we are before we come to faith Christ (Ephesians 1:4). He even knows the good works he’s called us to, long before we set out to do them (Ephesians 2:10).
In these uncertain days, it’s comforting to rest in how much God knows, and has always known, about what is happening right now. Illinois pastor Rayden Hollis has encouraged his church this way:
“The truth is that before the foundations of the world were laid, God knew I was going to be in this moment.” There’s comfort in that, says the pastor of Red Hill Church in Edwardsville. God could have put anyone here, but he chose us. “That’s got to mean something.”
As the uncertainty of these current circumstances lags on, it’s easy to feel unmoored. Let the rock-solid truth of God’s knowledge—his all-encompassing understanding of this time and this place and these people—comfort you today.
